Pylyp Orlyk was a Ukrainian political and military figure, a Hetman of the Zaporizhian Host in exile, and the author of the 1710 Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk, one of the most important Ukrainian political documents. After the defeat of the Swedish-Ukrainian forces at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, he left Ukraine with supporters of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. In 1710, Orlyk was elected Hetman and tried to build an alliance of European states against the Russian Empire.
Orlyk spent his final years in exile, moving between different countries and continuing his efforts to secure Ukrainian independence. He died in Iași on May 24, 1742, at the age of 69. He was buried at a local monastery, but the exact location of his grave is not known with certainty.
