William Shakespeare (April 26, 1564 – April 23, 1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. He authored approximately 39 plays, over 150 sonnets, and numerous poems.

He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He received basic education at the local grammar school. His works include tragedies (Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth), comedies (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night), and historical plays (Henry IV, Richard III). Shakespeare became an icon of English theater and Renaissance culture.

He died on April 23, 1616, in Stratford-upon-Avon and is buried at Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, England.
